Tihemme Gagnon, Writer / Producer

Welcome to the “Chaos & Courage” website. My name is Tihemme Gagnon. I am the writer and one of the producers of this series.

Chaos & Courage showcases the contributions of Aboriginal women across Canada to their communities and to the country as a whole. Most of the women who are showcased in our series are filling first response roles.

Aboriginal women, stories of inspiration and hope and overcoming great odds, are almost never told. I thought that was a huge injustice, and I wanted to address that. I think that Aboriginal women are unsung heroines in their communities. They bring about huge change in their communities for the better. They maintain culture. They are the storytellers, primarily.

Inspirational stories about Aboriginal women and girls are almost nonexistent. There are a lot of negative stories, stories of victimization, anger and stereotype. I wanted to move beyond that and tell these true stories of women who make positive changes in their communities on a day-to-day basis. A lot of them don’t consider themselves heroic at all. It’s just what they do, even though a lot of what they do, I couldn’t do. Their stories need to be told and they need to be celebrated.

I think it’s important to remember that these stories are universal stories, that anyone who wants to be a police officer can be a police officer. Anyone who wants to pursue a career in nursing should be encouraged to do so, midwifery, social work, politics, conservation, just even day-to-day heroes, just doing day-to-day things.
